There is a unique pacing to life in central Montana. It is a feeling that settles over you the moment you step out onto the River’s Edge Trail in the early morning, watching the mist rise slowly off the Missouri River while the rest of the world is still hitting snooze. My rides are how I power up for my day!

When people ask me what makes living in Great Falls and Cascade County so incredibly special, they usually expect me to talk about the local real estate market, housing square footage, or neighborhood boundaries. But finding the perfect place to live is about so much more than finding four walls and a roof. It is about discovering where your life can truly find its sense of serenity.

Ties to home

For me, that serenity is deeply tied to the Montana outdoors. We are a community grounded by nature, rich in history, and surrounded by landscapes that take your breath away every single day.

Whether you are fully planning on relocating to Great Falls or are just starting to explore what life under the Big Sky looks like, I wanted to share two of my personal favorite sanctuaries that define the true lifestyle of our region.

The Ageless Quiet of Giant Springs State Park

Discovered by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805, Giant Springs State Park is a place I return to whenever I need a quiet moment to reset. It is home to one of the largest freshwater springs in the country, pumping out over 156 million gallons of crystal-clear water every single day.

Standing by the constant, 54-degree bubbling pools, you realize the water you are looking at traveled underground from the Madison Aquifer beneath the Little Belt Mountains for roughly 26 years just to reach this point. It is a beautiful reminder to slow down, breathe, and trust the timing of life. With miles of single-track biking trails hugging the "Mighty Mo," it is the absolute heart of our local outdoor recreation.

The Hidden Majesty of Sluice Boxes State Park

If you travel just a short drive south near the historic town of Belt, you hit Sluice Boxes State Park. Here, Belt Creek has spent thousands of years carving dramatic, towering limestone cliffs and steep ledges right out of the mountains.

Walking along the old unmaintained railroad grade trail, you can still stumble upon the remnants of historic cabins and old mining structures from the 1800s. It is a rugged, pristine, and beautifully quiet canyon stream. Whether you are an avid fly fisherman tracking blue-ribbon trout, a hiker who doesn't mind a few cold river crossings, or a photographer chasing the perfect sunset light, Sluice Boxes offers an escape from the noise of modern life that is increasingly hard to find.
